  1. Well, lemme tell you guys, this was a really fun post to research – mostly because about half-way through I figured out what an incestuous little circle of songwriters this really is. There seem to be two main circles, one with David Hodges at its center, and one with Toby Gad at its center – and almost all the other people on the list have worked with one or the other, or both – you can almost trace the lines of networking that led them to each other. I can’t even remember half the funny connections I saw, but one interesting note – you know those new people Alex seemed to be working with a lot around Christmas, Mandi Perkins and Dillon Pace? I think they’re Toby Gad’s protegees or something…

Of course, there are some songwriters/producers that are entirely outside the clique, and personally those are mostly the ones I want to hear the most… The Avila Brothers, Ray Ruffin, Raphael Saadiq… omg those tracks must be amazing!!!

  2. Kass – Love this post. It really lays it all out. Alex really is working with some amazing people. OMG this album is going to be great!

WOW!!!!…that TOTALLY reinforces my belief that his management have BIG plans for marketing Alex!! There is no way that they would have Alex work with all these awesome writers/producers and not expect BIG returns on their investments. How exciting! And how exciting for Alex!! The suspense is killing me!!

  4. AWESOME job putting this together Kassandra! Thank you! It’s really incredible all the amazing people that have chosen to work with Alex, really speaks to how very talented he is. I can’t wait to hear all the mystery songs! :w00t:

  5. Dude, this is totally awesome. It’s pretty fun connecting the dots on songs, collaborators, and playing the 6 degrees of alex lambert :) Good job!!

  6. Amazing work you have done on this post! It must have taken you quite some time to gather this information. Thank you so much Kass!!
@Katherine- I can’t wait to hear all those secret songs either.

  7. Awesome post! Nicely done!

  8. Kass your amazing…..’nuf said lol

  9. I know of lot of the above were just songwriting sessions. I wonder if he got different producers when he went to record the final tracks. That could significantly affect the way a track turns out. Although some of them are both songwriters AND producers like the Avila Brothers, Toby Gad and David Hodges.

I’m going to hazard a guess and say maybe Ray Ruffin and Toby Gad have been doing or at least overseeing production work these last few weeks?

  10. Kass didn’t do any research or anything.. hahaha good job!!

  11. Niiiice job!! Very exhaustive list. . . . except for one little song called . . . Imperfectly Perfect!! Wasn’t that also Deekay guys?

*I know you’ve got Deekay listed, but thought IP should be listed along with DWMEO — if that’s who it was (I thought it was Deekay?)

  12. Quite an amazing compilation, Kass! This must have taken you a great deal of time, and your efforts are greatly appreciated.

Funny, because just this morning I was thinking “I wonder if Alex stays in touch with Cisco Adler?” I hope so, because he’s got to have connections up the wazoo in LA (he’s something of music royalty, with his Dad being the famous producer, Lou Adler.) I had no idea he was associated with Wiz Khalifa–that’s encouraging! I agree with Kass, in that I’m not thrilled with the folks in the David Hodges orbit–too much part of the Idol institution–and am looking forward to these other collabos that sound promising, like the Avila Bros and Saadiq.

@Snuffles, I’m also interested in the production phase of these demos. I know it’s not the norm anymore, but I hope he has one producer overseeing the entire record to make it cohesive. That’s what Crystal B was able to do (with David Bendeth), and I think it’s helped her get some pretty positive reviews and good reception.

  13. I think its AWESOME Kass…The casual lurker will be soooo impressed and, then, they can tell others about these collabs. @Diane-I hope they do not change any aspect of the Avila ,and DeStefano tracks, cuz they are INSANE! I remember after hearing parts of them thinking- I can’t believe its Alex’s record- it was like being transported to the highest end of Pop music like Michael Jackson, that level of track….So generally, I would agree with you about cohesion ,having one producer, but absolutely not with these 2 tracks…As good as IDK is -these other 2 are in a different league!!!!!!!!

  14. Wow, Kass! Thanks, this is amazing.

Ahhh, I’m getting so excited!!! I can’t wait to hear Alex’s album. I know it’s gonna be awesome!

@Diane I don’t think I’d worry too much about David Hodges. I think that was a one time songwriting/demo session. If he and Alex had been heavily involved, David would have made it known as he did when he was working with Katie Stevens.

I have this gut feeling that Ray Ruffin and Harvey Mason, Jr. have been involved in the production phase of things. If Iain Prire’s wanted to take Alex’s music to the organic/soul route early on as he stated, wouldn’t he already have had a producer/producers in mind. Ruffin and Mason have been in the picture since the beginning and have been with Alex on more than one occasion. Who selects the producer… 19 or the label?

Also could it be that he had enough songs for his first album prior to meeting with Toby Gad and everything since November is material for his second album? Music moves so fast today that I am wondering if this is a possibility.

Yesterday Alex tweeted Old Fashioned Girls??? I wonder what he meant by that…. He likes old fashioned girls or is there a possibility that “Old Fashioned Girl” will be a track on his album?

@alleycatfan As much as I agree with you..I must say that I think “I Didn’t Know” is in the same league as the other two. It is a powerful and impressionable song. The production is spot on. I don’t think that it could get any better. I know a song is great when I can play it in a continuous loop for 30 minutes. I’ve done that a time or two with I Didn’t Know; I can never get enough of it

  16. wow, it’s seriously impressive when it’s lumped in one place like this, thanks!

Do you know which ones were iicd vs. post-iicd era? That might give a clue to if there’s a label footing the bill, and even who he’s signed to. Has he worked with any of the top-dollar/big name producers after the show? I know Rick, Dillon, Soloman, and Mandi (solid artists, but not big name producers, right?) were recent collabs.

thrilled to see the Legend, Ne-Yo, Lil’ Wayne DNA in alex’s album! …Not so much the Archuleta, Reba, Hannah Montana connections haha.

    • lo: wow, it’s seriously impressive when it’s lumped in one place like this, thanks!

Post-IICD were Raphael Saadiq, Ray Ruffin, David Glass, and Tony Gad and his circle – if that tells ya anything… all the ones with unknown song titles lol. I’m not actually sure the Solomon session has happened yet – might still be upcoming? I did try to see if there were any clues regarding labels but it’s hard to say… there does seem to be a slight move from Sony to Universal-associated songwriters, but that could be wishful thinking lol… most of these people write for several labels.

Re: the Hannah Montana, Reba connections — well, a lot of these tracks are going to be discarded, right? But I wouldn’t discredit those connections too quickly… I mean DEEKAY have the Diddy and Lil Wayne connection, but they kinda suck in my opinion.

  17. I agree Lauren on I Didnt Know…I love that song, and (I feel) it showcases what he can do with his voice. But…at this point I think I am most excited about That Girl is Trouble, You Are the Reason and Never Waking up, but who am I kidding, I like most everything I have heard so far…

Also I was encouraged to see that when Alex got a tweet last night asking if he was coming out with and album, he answered “FOR SURE!” I dont usually see answers to that question. Good sign eh?

  18. Kassandra:
Post-IICD were Raphael Saadiq, Ray Ruffin, David Glass, and Tony Gad and his circle

I’m sure that Ray Ruffin appeared on the scene just a few weeks after Alex started on IICD. He visited in the house at least twice and I remember Alex tweeting about Ray a few times during IICD…one when they were working together. Glass was during and post. Saadiq and Gad were definitely post IICD.

    Kassandra:
Re: the Hannah Montana, Reba connections — well, a lot of these tracks are going to be discarded, right? But I wouldn’t discredit those connections too quickly… I mean DEEKAY have the Diddy and Lil Wayne connection, but they kinda suck in my opinion.

Agreed. DeStefano and Tommy Lee James…Quality song writers. Even Alex tweeted when the three of them were working together that they were creating a lyrical masterpiece or masters at creating lyrical pieces..something like that, nevertheless Alex was pleased.

    • @Lauren yeah Ray was definitely on the scene during IICD, but I don’t think they were working together – just hanging out or something. The first time he tweeted about being in studio with him was after IICD…

ETA: I think… but you remember these things better’n me…

  19. Most songwriters are freelance. They’ll work with any artist on any label. So I doubt that’s any kind of clue.

  20. WOW. Nice research!

  21. Hey Kass – I thought of another track I don’t see on the list – Untouchable. Not my fave track and I can’t remember the guy’s name . . David ______? Same guy Veronica wrote/recorded a demo with in that small studio.

    • David Kopatz. Yeah I couldn’t find anything worth noting about him. And anyone who dares to autotune Alex doesn’t make it onto the list lol. Pity because I did like the original song…

  22. Kassandra: David Kopatz. Yeah I couldn’t find anything worth noting about him. And anyone who dares to autotune Alex doesn’t make it onto the list lol. Pity because I did like the original song…

Ah – yes – nothing notable! Doesn’t surprise me!!

  23. Kassandra: David Kopatz. Yeah I couldn’t find anything worth noting about him. And anyone who dares to autotune Alex doesn’t make it onto the list lol. Pity because I did like the original song…

Ha ha ha ha. Right on sister!!!!! Alex’s acoustic version of Untouchable is the bomb!

  24. I noticed on David Kopatz facebook page that he posted that he worked with Shawn Ward and Veronica B, but never mentioned Alex, that I could see…wonder why that is, maybe wasn’t allowed to??

    • Hmmm maybe cause it would’ve gone something like this: “Hey guys! I produced this song for this great singer Alex Lambert!! … Whose voice I completely disrespected… who proceeded to complain about what I’d done with it on a live internet stream…… the video of which you can watch on YouTube…….. but hey, I thought I’d advertise it anyway!”

  25. Speaking of acoustic versions, I wonder what ever became of Butterflies? Didn’t Deekay and ?? ultimately get a hold of it? I hope they didn’t screw it up like Kopatz did to Untouchable (yes, @Lauren, Alex’s acoustic version of Untouchable is sexy voice times infinity!!)

Alex did befriend Ray Ruffin (or vice versa) way early in the IICD timeline. However, one doesn’t just stumble across Ray in the parking lot of Ralph’s (LOL), so I’m thinking that the producers set up their initial meeting for a reason. Mentor, perhaps? Or producer? Only time will tell.

@Linda, so glad to hear that Alex’s “FOR SURE” was in response to a tweet questioning his album release. I wish Alex would include the initial tweet with his response, because I miss some of those jewels of information too.

ETA: Good one, Kass! ::snicker, snicker::

  26. Kassandra: David Kopatz. Yeah I couldn’t find anything worth noting about him. And anyone who dares to autotune Alex doesn’t make it onto the list lol. Pity because I did like the original song…

I hope “Untouchable” gets re-done. Because it’s an AMAZING song. I remember listening to Alex sing it in his room on his guitar and got chills.

  27. Does anyone have a link to the video of Alex singing “Untouchable” in his room acoustically?

  28. I’m getting chills just remembering Alex singing it acoustically. As I said above, the way he was singing it = “sexy voice times infinity”. I would love to listen to it again. Is it on one of the mp3 compilations? I can’t remember…

  29. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=D0XRCCKO I hope this link still works for you Diane. This was when he sang it to Veronica over skype.

He plays just a bit of it on this clip. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xdzdij_07-08-2010-justin-visits_webcam

This is the clip with Untouchable in the beginning of his mini concert. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xdyzf4_07-08-2010-alex-mini-concert_webcam
He’s a little to close to the mic- The boy’s got power!!

  30. That’s it! Honestly, if I had my druthers, I would release “Untouchable” as the first single. Only if they re-produced it in a similar manner of a Bruno Mars style song.

  31. Thanks Lauren! Gotta head out for work, but I’ll listen to them tonight. Wheeeeee!

Remember when he was playing it to the Melons in the spare bedroom and he said he couldn’t talk about some of the stuff about this song? Like he wrote most of it, but couldn’t verbalize the “behind the scenes” stuff on camera. Hope it doesn’t get shelved because of that.

  32. @Diane when you get home- I don’t think the link to the audio file worked, so I uploaded it again. The other link I found back in a comment from the summer. Again Alex was skyping with Veronica and sang her two songs- Untouchable and One Kiss. I have included the 40 seconds of One Kiss also. It is great! I hope that it makes the album for sure. At least Shelby was able to capture these 2 raw acoustic versions.

    http://www.mediafire.com/?kkln9cb0sra55

It didn’t get shelved for that reason. It was just not that strong of a song probably compared to the rest. I’ll blame it on the over production. Geesh

@Kass You crack me up. Thanks for your last comment…too funny!

  33. Lauren: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=D0XRCCKO I hope this link still works for you Diane. This was when he sang it to Veronica over skype. Dang Lauren, Thanks! I missed all this…I, too, love the song, just not in love with the production of it.

  34. Kassandra: Hmmm maybe cause it would’ve gone something like this: “Hey guys! I produced this song for this great singer Alex Lambert!! … Whose voice I completely disrespected… who proceeded to complain about what I’d done with it on a live internet stream…… the video of which you can watch on YouTube…….. but hey, I thought I’d advertise it anyway!”  (Reply)

~~OK, Well, that answers my question……..

  35. Nice job Kass!! Can I choose “All of the above” as my choice for which I’m most excited about?

  36. @Kass-LMAO at your pretend quote from David Kopatz- he will hate us , but he is a HACK, and Alex’s talent was buried under his prod.
@Lauren- I think Old Fashioned Girl will be on the album- I remember after Alex recorded it,he said in the GR that he sang his “ass off today”, and I mean that session lasted over 12,13 hours…so I think they were serious about that one!…
Also, David Hodges, and Eman have been failing lately IMO,- Archie’s recent tracks they produced were very poor, so I’m thinking they will be out…

  37. Jordin Sparks is working with John Legend today. Alex must be JEALOUS!!

  38. Alex’s twitter numbers are finally rising again- I’ve kept close watch the last 2 days- is it the buzz about big news around the corner, and /or his new twitter icon? Hmmm…Its probably the buzz, but pleeeeeese keep rising…

  39. And 19 Entertainment’s first tweet since October and of 2011 goes to Adam Lambert. Maybe someone came back to work, lol. Maybe there will be an announcement soon about Alex.

  40. Good ideas-Maybe 19 should post 30,or 40 second samples of 5, or so Alex tracks, and have the public select the first single. The good news for Alex is that he has 4, or 5 really strong tracks, and most artists are lucky to have 1, or 2…This makes the liklihood of a hit lead single much stronger. And, Alex literally has 5, or more crazy-good tracks …, SO WE’RE VERY LUCKY…

  41. @alleycatfan, I’ve also been checking those sliding twitter followers for weeks now! So glad they seemed to turn around this week. Not sure what’s going on there, or why they suddenly improved…maybe it was the Adele tweet. Or probably, the artwork contest. That was a good idea to promote traffic to his site–if that idea came from Alex himself, he’s got a good marketing head on his shoulders. (OK, mods, fess up–you suggested it, right?)

Well, the sleeping giant that is 19 Entertainment has finally woken, huh? Not surprised at all that the first tweet is about Adam. That’s their boy. (Poor Lee, he didn’t even warrant any tweets for his album promotion in November. lol) Anyway, glad that they’re back in action, obviously timed with the start of AI and all the other stuff that must be going on. Bodes well for Alex.
@Alleycatfan, you have no idea how jealous I am that you’ve heard this songs.

  42. alleycatfan: Alex’s twitter numbers are finally rising again-

Diane: @alleycatfan, I’ve also been checking those sliding twitter followers for weeks now! So glad they seemed to turn around this week. Not sure what’s going on there,

Im wondering, in part, if it had something to do with the whole Beiber/Gomez thing…Whoa! some of Beibs fans got pretty upset..he may have gained few there…Just a thought

  43. I can’t give up on trying to figure out the “classic set list” that Alex tweeted a picture of in December. He and his band had practiced for few weeks for something. What about if it was for something like this?
    http://www.atlanticrecords.com/atlantictv
Something filmed for whatever label he went with?

  44. Lauren: I can’t give up on trying to figure out the “classic set list” that Alex tweeted a picture of in December. He and his band had practiced for few weeks for something. What about if it was for something like this?

Good thought, Lauren. Hope it’s true. It really seems like things are happening. I just wish we knew what? Better yet, wish we knew WHEN!

  45. Cathy:
Good thought, Lauren. Hope it’s true. It really seems like things are happening. I just wish we knew what? Better yet, wish we knew WHEN!

Pardon me I copied the wrong link. Try this one… :dizzy:

    http://www.studio1290.com/sessions

  46. You’re excused. haha.

  47. @Lauren, I like the way you think! Definitely a possibility that the setlist was for an artist “showcase” of some sort.

Thought you guys might like to see this Music Industry Chart for 2010 regarding music labels:

    2010 YEAR-TO-DATE RECORD COMPANY MARKET SHARE (1/04/10 – 1/02/11)

(Reflects the market share for the entire entity, including sub-distributed companies, for the 52-week year)

    CURRENT ALBUMS
    2010

    UMG 30.84%
    SME 27.95%
    WMG 20.01%
    EMI 10.18%
    OTHERS 11.02%

    UMG: Universal Music Group
    SME: Sony Music
    WMG: Warner Music Group

It’s clear from this chart why so many of us are hopeful he lands on a Universal label. They have the most clout and have actually increased market share this year. Plus, the obvious new Idol connection makes them more appealing. I wouldn’t mind an Indie label, but there is no way to get Pop radio play. That only works for Alt Rock acts like Mumford and Sons and similar.

  48. I SWEAR I remember Alex saying he was interested in Warner Music quite early on. I could see him on Atlantic Records. Maybe that’s why he tweeted about Wiz Khalifa. He just signed with them too.

  49. @Diane Thanks for the information that you provided above. I became interested in Atlantic Records today which is a division of MWG. I found this article about Pete Ganbarg. He heads the A&R department of Atlantic records and there are some names in this article we might all recognize.
Simon Fuller, Iain Pirie, Kara DioGuardi, Howard Benson (who is one of Pete’s best friends and recommended Olympia to work with Alex in the dream house.)
Pete sent Pat Monahan of Train to work with Espionage. Remember when there was speculation that Alex may get to go to New York and work with them. Pete also A&R’d several of the albums for the American Idol franchise. It’s always fun to speculate..soon we will know for sure.

ETA: Snuffles I just saw your comment. I’d love to know what you think of this article. Yes Whiz is with Atlantic and Bruno Mars is with Elektra, which is part of WMG.

  50. @Lauren – Interesting. Kara DioGuardi A&R’s at Warner Brother’s records. That’s another connection. She could have hooked Alex up. She really did love him while he was on the show.
